AWOL Letter in GQ Magazine
My wonderful cousin Katherine recently sent me a package. In that package were some goodies as well as a GQ magazine. There was a very interesting article in that issue. Link To ArticleIt was about a man who had run to Canada to get away from the Army. He was AWOL (Absent With Out Leave). The official definition is: Absent from one's assigned military post or duties without official permission. These are very serious charges. After reading the article thoroughly, I came to a very clear conclusion; the people in this article are simply COWARDS. They ran to Canada because they can’t look their friends and family in the eye anymore. In the article it describes in detail how Joshua Key, his wife and four children made their journey over the border to Canada. It is sad, the detail Josh goes into to ensure his so called escape. He even contemplates jumping into the water near Niagara Falls. As you read further into the story the writer and Joshua introduce you to Jeremy Hinzman and other deserters. They all seem to have the same “poor me” attitude and they all suffer from the most despicable characteristic of all, cowardice. At one time or another everyone needs to face reality and decide what they stand for and what they don’t. Many people decide to do what ever is trendy or what people in the media are doing. I call this convenient morality. To do what is right and take a stand usually requires sacrifice. What I honestly believe is that the people in this article are simply scared. They are scared to not do their job well, they are scared to see the atrocities of war and they are simply scared to die. I can honestly say, I am scared every time I go out side the security of our base, but I am here. We drive down these roads where you can see giant holes where IEDs (improvised explosive devices) have gone off, some of them with marks from burnt Humvee tires and burnt gas or oil. It is my opinion that these deserters have no honor and no commitment to the contract they made when they voluntarily (not drafted) enlisted in the Armed Forces. People try and compare this war to Viet Nam. There is absolutely no comparison.
Many years ago I heard a quote that read, “In war, when the bullets are flying, you don’t fight for a cause or even your country. You fight for the men next to you”. Ultimately, that is why I am here. I am here to take care of MY Marines. Out of all the things I am most proud of, being a “Green Side Corpsman” tops the list. I truly feel sorry for Joshua. I can’t even begin to imagine what he will say to his four children when they learn that Daddy is a deserter. There can be no greater shame. In the article he speaks of the horrible things the Soldiers in his unit were doing. He says that is part of the reason why he went AWOL. What he should have done is man up, show some maturity and talk to a senior enlisted or officer. They would have corrected the wrong doers. He also says that he was duped into "doing the Army’s evil work". Josh, keep lying to yourself. People who lie and are cowards are constantly having to lie to other people and themselves to cope with their life and the decisions they have made.
Over the last several months and even recently we have seen an increase in worldwide terrorism. The Middle East is not the only place we are seeing attacks. We have seen attacks in France, Indonesia, Chechnya, and even England. Do we really want to fight a war on terrorism in the continental US? Personally, I don’t. I would rather take the fight to them.
I am writing all this because I feel ashamed that people like Joshua Key, Jeremy Hinzman, Brandon Hughey, Ivan Brobeck, Darrell Anderson, Clifford Cornell and David Sanders ever were allowed to serve in the United States Military. Our country is in a time of need and these deserters abandoned her when she needed them most. It is my opinion that the people that have gone AWOL / UA during this conflict and ran to other countries, namely Canada, should have their citizenship revoked. That may sound harsh, but that was the choice they made when they voluntarily enlisted in the military, they were given a wealth of benefits that include, pay, housing, VA access, medical and dental. They took advantage of those benefits but were not willing to work for them. That to me is utterly ridiculous.
I am a proud American. I am here to take care of my Marines complete our mission and get back home to my lovely wife.

Yup, after reading the article, I completely agree with your analysis: COWARDS.
Speaking of cowards, what ever happened to all the hollywood types and their liberal ideological ilk that said they would leave this country if Bush was reelected in 2004? Hmm, too coward to leave I guess. Maybe they will gain confidence from this mental dwarf of a soldier's story and finally head north.
But I doubt it, cowards rarely follow through.
=)
Thank you for your insight, Joe. You are correct that volunteers to the military, should carefully weigh their decisions. Your article was insightful and very well articulated. I am proud of you, especially your ability to keep your word.
The men and women serving our country have all enlisted for their own reasons. Many to get away from what they are dealing with at home others for career and a future, but if you enlist you have made a commitement to our country and most of all to yourself. Running from something that you have made a commitment to only show the others around you that you are weak. With all the mayham that is going on in the world today, we don't need the weak. I am glad those weak bastards ran. I don't want you protecting my god given right. The men and women protecting our freedom have more courage than me performing their duties abroad, but by no means will I ever demean them for what they are doing. I thank god every day that there are strong men and women that can perform their duties and protect what I have. Keep up the good work all of you, stay safe, believe in what you are doing and don't believe for a second that you are not appriciated. To the runners "Don't let the door hit ya where god split ya" If you want out stay out because I don't want you here.
Adam, proud american and supporter of the brave men and women protecting what I don't have the courage to. Thank you!!

I served with Key in Iraq, he was in my squad and he is nothing but a pathetic excuse for a human. Key has all these stories mixed up or they flat out did not happen. His children will realize some day what a coward he was going AWOL and leaving his squad shorthanded for his selfish actions.
Iraq has the second largest reserves of oil after Saudi Arabia. The US has virtually none. Do you think it's a coincidence the army secured the oil fields first? The reason you think the US is in Iraq to fight terrorism is because your media have kept the truth from you. Everyone in the world (except Americans) knows what this war is about - oil and territory. Open your eyes man, get the news from anywhere but the self-interested US media, for example, check out the BBC, CBC, etc. Get a different perspective. I have great respect for Americans - it's just your lying government that needs to be kicked out. Bush has done more to harm the US reputation than any other president. The war and occupation in Iraq is immoral and illegal. Joshua Key is a patriot for exposing the war for what it is.
Mr. Le Sauvage, Thank you for your comments. I gather from the last name you are french or Canadian. However, I could not disagree with you more. That is what is SO GREAT about the US, it is guys like my brothers-in-arms and my self that fight to ensure that people in the US and around the world have the right to make statement that they believe in.
Unfortunately, I still believe and will always continue to believe that Josh key is a coward and ran away from a commitment that he made volluntarily. I am greatful to him because we do not need people in the US military like him. It is good that he left. Obviously, he did not have the integrity and the courage to fulfil his commitment.
Josh Key was someone who showed real courage much more so then many other so called 'patriots' who think it is ok to kill and main children because "I was just following orders'....
Josh Key is a true patriot and stood up for real American values..
It sure takes great bravery to make anonymous comments. Just about as much bravery as Josh!

Sorry I'm on my iPhone and couldn't make an account so my name would show up...I'm James "doc" Campbell. I was an army medic for seven years and served in 3 combat zones.... I was also Joshua keys medic.... None of what he said happened in the GQ interview is true as the medic (and I'm sure you know this doc) it was my job to save lives both American and Iraqi. Yes I have gotten Iraqi blood on my hands not for the purpose of killing but to save there lives. Keys was worthless he went on leave and never came back that kept soldiers that were doing there jobs from going home and to the people who said he is a true patriot. Tell that to his fellow platoon members that on aug 25 2003 lost a leg (there were 3 of them ) that story is in an oct 2003 issue of Time. Keys was not there and that was one less soldier to lay down covering fire. On second thought I wouldn't have wanted him there he was the type of guy that would have gotten some one killed. Keys I wish you the best of luck......you'll need it in hell.
